“Gone Girl” – Will It Be Worth The Wait?

As we all know by now, the trailer for David Fincher’s version of “Gone Girl” was released on Monday night (the film will be released October 3rd).

Fincher (7even, Fight Club, Zodiac, The Social Network, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) is possibly one of my favorite directors so I was excited to see a snippet of what he’s done with Gillian Flynn’s best-selling tale of a psychotically dangerous modern day marriage.

I devoured “Gone Girl” over two nights of 3am proclamations of “just one more chapter!” It is an addictive read, no question.

However, when my book club gathered to discuss the novel, I agreed with the group that three quarters of the way through, it derails and gets, quite frankly, ridiculous.

For those who haven’t read the book yet, but plan to, I won’t include any spoilers.

The story is about Amy Elliot Dunne (to be played by Rosamund Pike) who disappears on her five-year wedding anniversary to Nick Dunne (Ben Affeck). As the investigation into her apparent murder gets underway, secrets of this not-so perfect couple are revealed and the book flip flops cleverly between Nick’s present day account of the investigation and Amy’s past diary entries which portray her as the ultimate “cool girl”/long suffering wife.

Then, like I said, it gets ridiculous.

Thankfully, Flynn and Fincher have allegedly worked together to change the ending and make it more plausible. Whilst plenty of theories have been cast as to what these changes could involve, we’ll just have to wait until October 3rd to find out.

“Gone Girl” will also star Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry.
